12.Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden (Edo Period)
Established by UKITA Hideie in 1597, Okayama Castle became the castle of feudal lord KOBAYAKAWA Hideaki after the Battle of Sekigahara and lord IKEDA Mitsumasa from 1603 onwards.
In the vicinity of where the Okayama Prefectural Government Building and Okayama Public Library stand today is Okayama Castle Ninomaru Historical Site, where the IKEDA clan’s residence for chief vassals was built. High-quality dishes such as Chinese and domestically made pottery, porcelain and makie lacquerware were excavated from there, reminding us of the lifestyle led by the top-class warriors of that time.
Okayama Korakuen Garden, on the opposite side of Okayama Castle, is a Daimyo Garden erected by feudal lord IKEDA. An Ofunairi and Onarimon, a wharf and gate made specifically for feudal lords, and a wooden sluiceway for garden ponds have been excavated here.
